Challenge

The nature of the Boland 90 hiking challenge is a tough event where hiking skills, including fitness, is of utmost importance. Even at the best of times, e.g. favourable weather conditions, a hike of 90 km within 3 days requires considerable hiking experience in all weather conditions, proficiency in practical safety & emergency protocols, team work, navigation skills and a working knowledge of environmental awareness. Before the start of the event, participants should be mentally prepared to face any situation that might develop during the challenge.

All four team members are required to complete the event over the period. The points system applied during the competition is determined as follows: The following maximum points may be earned for the various aspects tested. Tables will be provided at registration to indicate how points are allocated with regard to TIME and INTERVALS.

TIME: Up to 10 points per stage may be earned for average team time. The emphasis is on time planning (and thus regulating your walking speed) coupled with fitness to reach the end just within the minimum time to earn maximum points. There is no advantage in beating the minimum time or another team to the end of a stage.

INTERVAL: Up to 3 points per stage can be earned for the smallest interval between the first and last members of a team; walking in pairs.

TASKS: Each team can earn points per stage for practical and theoretical tasks. Tasks may range between safety, environmental observation, crisishandling, navigation (map-reading & the use of a compass), etc

SAFETY: Random checks may be made and points may be earned for safety, survival and first aid equipment carried.

The team with the highest number of points in each category wins the competition within their category.

A prize-giving presentation evening and closing ceremony is held the evening of the last day which includes various award categories and recognition of service awards for the event marshals and officials.

This is usually followed by an evening around the camp bonfire where victories are celebrated, friendships are made and farewells at the same time as some teams make their way home that same evening. From past experience this is also truly a magical evening of the Boland 90.
